ICP #7 | On small pleasures

My colleague saying I’ve got a present for you during a function at work whilst surreptitiously handing me a canapé-sized taco wrapped in a napkin.
Sneaking into the storeroom to eat it.
A cold gin and tonic in a hot bath.
Someone asking me what conditioner I use.
Stomping to work with my headphones in, pretending I’m in a music video.
New books. New lipstick. Fresh flowers. Clean sheets.
Timing a journey just right.
The space between a bad play finishing and the audience realising its over where the actors awkwardly wait for applause.
Successful risotto.
Remembering what I was going to say.
TV detectives. Strong female protagonists.
Seeing the city I live in on film and feeling like I have insider knowledge.
Fictional characters’ mismatched wage and apartment size.
Quizzes. Portmanteaus.
The words sausage sizzle.
The heart-eyes emoji. The unicorn emoji.
The way chips in England come with ketchup and mayo as standard. The way potato wedges in Australia come with sour cream and sweet chilli sauce as standard. In fact, two or more condiments on anything.
A man in colourful socks.
Being the first person to spot the sea when driving to the coast.
Knowing what to say when a bartender asks how I like my martini.
People who can pull off clashing patterns.
Peas. In any form. At any time.
Having in depth discussions about skin care whilst drinking enough wine to ruin our skin.
Telling people I’ve never seen Star Wars.
Podcasts while tidying.
When I’m skyping my mum and she silently lowers her laptop to the floor so I can talk to the dog.
The smell of mangoes as you enter the supermarket.
Getting long emails and short texts.
Friends who recommend feminist theorists. Friends who recommend a good restaurant, a new TV show, getting another drink.
Fresh pasta. Instant noodles.
Finding exactly the right gift for someone I love.
Free art galleries. Bad public art on the side of the motorway.
Finishing a book.
Mozzarella. Halloumi. Manchego.
Dog memes. Dog videos. Dogs.
